School gets more than 700% return while fundraising for Sudan.

A Headteacher’s report by Kim Spencer

Here at Kennet Valley we spent 2 weeks of the summer term using the Sudan resource ‘Morning Teacher’. The whole school used the Sudan to study all areas of the curriculum from Numeracy (capacity and carrying quantities of water) to PE (traditional African games played by children).

Every child in the school was given a £1 coin and we discussed how every child can make a difference. 1 mug of porridge a day can prevent starvation at a cost of 20 euro cents (which we discussed as being 20p).

With their pound every child in school went away to raise money for the Sudan. Some children bought a sponge and washed cars, many children bought cake ingredients and made and sold them after school with help from mums, others did more jobs around the home.

We are a very small school who gave out £65 as a starting point. After our original money was deducted the children at Kennet Valley had raised £501! We were incredibly proud of them and their fantastic efforts.

The two weeks we learnt about the Sudan enriched everyone’s lives and the children here really understood that each one of them could make a difference in all sorts of ways. For once it was not about who could raise the most money but who could provide at least a mug of asseeda/porridge.

We organised our own day of food tasting, cooking and traditional crafts and had a great time. We thoroughly enjoyed using the resource and will come back to it again soon I’m sure.

We have sent our money off to the Sudan Link and wanted to share our enjoyment and success with you all.
