The weather so far has been glorious this term and the children have been outside as much as possible.  Games for some classes are becoming more competitive and on 23 April Years 5 and 6 made up a mixed football team to play in the tournament at Avon Valley College.  Our fortunes were mixed but we ended on a high beating Netheravon A team 1 – 0.  Jack Bourne scored the winning goal, which was a brave effort as he had twisted his ankle in the warm up.

Years 5 and 6 have also qualified for the District Hockey finals which they are eagerly awaiting on 30 April.

Book Week is always a highlight of our year and this time we were lucky enough to have an author and an illustrator to work with the children.  Published by Puffin Books, the author, Kay Woodward, lives in the New Forest and has written many stories, among them ‘Robot Wars’ and ‘Hooray for Piglet’.  Her friend, illustrator Bridget Holden, is one of our parents and lives locally.  Together they made the printed world come alive for the children as they pored over stories together.

This became even more realistic when the entire school dressed up as circus characters on World Book Day, 5 March 2009 and St Michael’s embraced The Big Top.  We tracked down books about circuses and every class enjoyed book-based, circus-themed activities throughout the day.

Finally, a student teacher working for the Bridge Project, a diocesan organisation which supports schools, organised  a series of lessons for Years 3 and 4 which culminated in a musical performance.   Creation, a very ambitious theme,  was imaginatively interpreted through music and involved a great deal of percussion.
